Louisiana Republican Representative Mike Johnson, a prominent deputy whip and constitutional lawyer,
well-known for his fiery exchanges on the House Judiciary Committee, has been selected as the fourth nominee by his GOP colleagues to assume the position of Speaker. In a decision that carries significant weight and will undoubtedly shape his legacy, Johnson aligned himself with former President Donald Trump by voting in favor of overturning the 2020 election results.
Mike Johnson, who also serves as the vice chair of the House Republican Conference, faces a challenging path to secure the 217 votes required to clinch the Speaker’s gavel, especially considering the fact that he already has over 40 votes against him. The majority of those in opposition seem to favor the return of ousted former Speaker Kevin McCarthy from California.
Speaking to reporters late on a Tuesday night, Johnson expressed his commitment to the democratic process, saying, “Democracy is messy sometimes, but it is our system. This conference that you see, this House Republican majority, is united.”
